Any good sources for a beginner. I really want to do a good AEF impression.

JDR replied to Goofbal19100's topic in (1917-1919) WORLD WAR ONE, RUSSIAN INTERVENTION

Goofbal, I would recommend that you reach out to a WWI living history group/unit, if you have one in your neck of the woods, and try to get plugged in with them if an impression is what you’re after. That way they can help guide you to vendors that sell authentic reproduction gear for reenacting and make sure you look the part. Some groups will loan firearms to members for their impressions too. To get familiar with the ins-and-outs of the American Expeditionary Forces I’d recommend you pick up a copy of Campaign and Service Credits of World War One by Scott Schoner. It’s a broad covering of the U.S. military’s actions and organization in Europe and elsewhere from 1917-1918. Searching around forums here for information on specific units, original items and photos I’m sure can help too. Hope that helps you! Best Regards, -J.D.

Meyer Flight Surgeon Wing - Probable Restrike

rathbonemuseum.com replied to VMI88's topic in MEDICAL WING BADGES

You are correct that it is a modern N.S. Meyer restrike made with the original dies. They are worth basically the sum of their material. So like $20. Worth nothing to wing collectors. We all have some in our "box of tears" before everyone caught on. here is the post that discusses Meyer restrikes:

Indicators of Fake Vietnam Lighters CAVEAT EMPTOR (Buyer Beware)

Cobra 6 Actual replied to Cobra 6 Actual's topic in

Forum member mtnman brought this lighter to my attention yesterday. The Zippo has a 1970 date code and the front looks pretty good overall: Although the DUI is a little mis-shaped, especially the “85”, it didn’t set off major alarm bells. But, here’s the reverse: The Army Nurse Corps Insignia is a bit left of center. However, the staff of the Caduceus in the middle of the design is WAY off-center. This looks like someone engraved this free hand. In actually Insignia were usually done with a template. So, is this a fake? Based on the few indicators I’ve listed I would say “yes, it is a fake.” But, as noted in my earlier posting it is getting more and more difficult to determine that.

Meyer Flight Surgeon Wing - Probable Restrike

VMI88 posted a topic in MEDICAL WING BADGES

I'm pretty sure this wing is a restrike: the pin opens 180 degrees and there are no index marks for the findings on the reverse. However, it's a quality die-struck wing. Is it safe to assume it's a more recent Meyer restrike rather than a fake? It doesn't exactly match other Meyer restrikes I found on the forum but these seem to have been made over time and show a lot of variation. Is there any value to a sterling Meyer restrike?

On the 20th of this month, I made a post about the possible identification of the PP for the 78th Engineer Battalion, Special Weapons Platoon, which is located in ASMIC's Engineer cloth catalog. I came across a reunion for the 275th Engineer Company, Atomic Demolition Munition and one picture had a group picture and above them was a sign with the patch and the unit's ID. I believe that the identification for the patch should be change with the new information. Here is the picture of the reunion group under the sign and the patch from my collection. Larry

      M1 helmet from Northern Italy

Rhscott replied to BlackJoker's topic in

Great times on the Autostrada out of Genova up thru miles of mountain tunnels to Milan via Alessandra. The bus circuit from Milan to Turin was first rate…back then anyway. Are two locations I can not remember where they were…can you help? The town with the fountain I think was near Turin and the Italian forces military facility was in the Lombardy (Lombadori??) area but I can’t remember where. I learned long ago not to mess with the Carabinieri. They worked with us at the ports in Genova.

BlackJoker replied to BlackJoker's topic in

Thank you very much for your comments and opinions, I always appreciate everyone's comments because everything proves useful in this sector. Unfortunately there is no story or imaginative tale behind it, it was simply found in the early 1980s in a flea market in a small town in the Mantua area, paid very little and never been in other collections before.

      M1 helmet from Northern Italy

The Rooster replied to BlackJoker's topic in

It looks like the original strap on one side with the proper brass hardware and a replacement or newer or un used strap on the other. They are slightly different in color too. The side with the verdigris on the brass is greener than the other strap which looks to be more tan. The tan strap has somewhat fresh looking rust on it. The greener hued strap does not. Cannot see any rust on the helmet. I personally think the paint on the leadership stripe is weird looking. The overall finish reminds me in some ways of a helmet thats been dipped in acid. For instance. Heres what appears to be an old low dome from Korea? Vietnam? eras??? This is a lid that was sitting out somewhere. The one above appears altered. My 2-5 cents. Just my opinions and Ive been off before. But Im questioning it because of what I think I see. BlackJoker what are the circ*mstances under which this helmet was found?
