Here is what’s open and closed on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Halton Hills, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Niagara Falls and the Niagara Region.
This year, the Civic Holiday falls on Monday, Aug. 5, and many places, businesses, and services are closed on that day.
While government buildings and services will be closed on Monday, many businesses will remain open. However, to avoid disappointment, it’s best to call ahead or check online to confirm if your favourite restaurant or local grocery store is open.

Mississauga
On Aug. 5, non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including City Hall) and Region of Peel offices will be closed. Banks, libraries and some community centres will also be closed.
Canada Post will be closed (no mail pick-up or delivery), and there will be no waste collection on Aug. 5. Garbage and recycling will be picked up one day later than usual and Community Recycling Centres will be closed on Aug. 5, reopening on Aug. 6.

As for what’s open, residents can visit Square One (including The Food District and Walmart Supercentre), most stores and restaurants at Heartland Town Centre, Erin Mills Town Centre, Dixie Outlet Mall, most grocery stores (including Rabba grocery stores), most bars and restaurants that are typically open on Mondays, some Beer Store locations, some LCBO stores (call/check ahead of time), most Shoppers Drug Marts and movie theatres.
For transit, MiWay will operate on a regular Sunday schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.
TransHelp: All trips for Monday, Aug. 5 and Tuesday, Aug. 6 must be booked by 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4 by calling 905-791-1015. (The TransHelp office will be closed on Aug. 5)

Brampton
On the Civic Holiday, all non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including City Hall) and Region of Peel offices will be closed. Peel services that will not operate on the holiday include Access Peel counters, the Dental Services Contact Centre, early years and child care services, the Family Health Call Centre, vaccination clinics, healthy sexuality clinics, Ontario Works in Peel, the needle exchange/harm reduction mobile van and housing services/client services. Banks, libraries and some community centres will also be closed.
The Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) will be closed.
Canada Post will be closed (no mail pick-up or delivery), and there will be no waste collection on Aug. 5. Garbage and recycling will be picked up one day later than usual and Community Recycling Centres will be closed on Aug. 5, reopening on Aug. 6.
A number of businesses will be open. On Aug. 5, residents can visit Shopper’s World, Bramalea City Centre, most grocery stores, most bars and restaurants that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead), select Beer Store locations (including 198 Queen St. E., 180 Sandalwood Pkwy. and 80 Peel Centre Dr.), some Wine Rack and LCBO locations (call ahead), most Shoppers Drug Mart locations and movie theatres.
For transit, Brampton Transit and Zum will operate on a holiday schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule. All TransHelp trips for Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 must be booked by 7 p.m. on Aug. 4.

Halton
On Aug. 5, banks, city/town halls, non-emergency federal and provincial government offices and non-emergency Halton Region offices will be closed in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills. Most community centres, seniors’ centres, pools, arenas and libraries will be closed, along with the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The Mattamy National Cycling Centre, the parking garage at 300 Church Street and the Oakville Museum will be closed.
There will be no garbage pick up on Monday, Aug. 5 (all waste collection will be one day later than usual).
Canada Post will be closed (no mail pick-up or delivery).
A number of places will be open, including local parks and certain outdoor recreational amenities, most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, most restaurants and bars that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead), most grocery stores, select Beer Stores in all four municipalities, the Rotary Outdoor Pool in Milton, Burlington’s Nelson Pool and Splash Park, Mountainside Pool and Splash Park, and LaSalle Wading Pool and Splash Park, outdoor splash pads in all towns and cities, Conservation Halton Parks (Crawford Lake, Hilton Falls, Kelso, Mount Nemo, Mountsberg and Rattlesnake Point), Terra Cotta Conservation Area in Halton Hills and some LCBO and Wine Rack locations (call ahead).
Local shopping centres will be open, including Toronto Premium Outlets, Milton Mall, Burlington Centre, Mapleview Mall and Oakville Place.
For transit, Oakville Transit will run on a Sunday schedule, Burlington Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule, Milton Transit will not operate and GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.

Durham
In Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington, Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog, non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including city and town halls) and Durham Region offices will be closed. Banks, post offices, libraries, waste transfer stations and most community centres will also be closed.The Pickering Museum Village will be closed.
There will be no waste pick-up, so garbage and recycling schedules will be pushed ahead one day.
A number of businesses and destinations will be open, including most big box and department stores, most bars and restaurants that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead), convenience stores, movie theatres, most grocery stores, pharmacies and most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, cannabis stores (call ahead), most breweries that are open Mondays (call ahead), splash pads and outdoor recreational parks and trails. Residents can also check out outdoor pools,including Camp Samac in Oshawa, Orono Park in Clarington and Ajax Memorial Pool. Somemunicipal recreation centres and most tourist destinations will be open.
Pickering Town Centre, Whitby Mall and Oshawa Centre will be open.
Select Beer Store locations will remain open in the region, along with some LCBOs.
For transit, Durham Transit and PULSE buses will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Niagara
Since Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake are popular tourist destinations, most businesses will remain open–as they do on more official federal and provincial holidays.However, as fewer businesses generally observe the holiday, the other 10 municipalities in Niagara, including St. Catharines and Welland, are mostly open.
That said, non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including city and town halls) and Niagara Region offices will be closed.Other places that will be closed include the Niagara College Teaching Brewery, Dragan Brewing, banks, Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery), community recycling centres and Decew Falls Brewing in St. Catharines. Many libraries and community centres will be closed, so call ahead before heading out.
There will be no garbage pick-up on Monday, Aug. 5. All waste collection will be one day later than normal.
A number of places will be open, includingCanada One in Niagara Falls, SmartCentres in Niagara Falls, Outlet Collection at Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake, The Pen Centre in St Catharines (Landmark Cinemas are open), Fairview Mall in St Catharines, Briarfield Shopping Centre in St Catharines, Pendale Plaza in St Catharines, Seaway Mall in Welland, SmartCentres in Welland and St Catharines, most grocery stores, most wineries and breweries (call ahead), select Beer Store locations, some LCBO stores, most bars and restaurants that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead), most Shoppers Drug Marts, movie theatres and tourist attractions (call ahead).
For transit, GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule and transit services throughout the Niagara Region will operate on holiday hours.

Hamilton
While many things are open, all non-emergency federal, provincial and municipal (including City Hall) offices are closed. Other services and businesses that will be closed on Aug. 5 include banks, rec centres, arenas, Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery), libraries (closed on Aug. 4 and 5), the Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park, all civic museums, the Hamilton Farmers’ Market (closed Sunday and Monday), mobile COVID vaccine clinics, the Dental Health Bus and, the Housing Services office and Animal Services.
The Accessible Transportation Services customer service office will beclosed onMonday, Aug. 5.
Garbage and recycling (blue box, green bin and yard waste) will be collected one day later. Waste must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Community Recycling Centres are closed on Monday, Aug. 5 and will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
A number of destinations will remain open, including local parks, trails, conservation areas and beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead), most grocery stores and pharmacies, CF Lime Ridge Mall, Eastgate Square, select Beer Store, LCBO and Wine Rack locations, city-run indoor pools and Wild Waterworks.
For transit, DARTS will be operating holiday service hours. HSR will operate on a Sunday or holiday schedule. GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.

While most tourist attractions will be open in Canada’s biggest city, non-emergency federal, provincial and municipal services (including City Hall) will be closed. Residents and visitors should note that Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery), banks, and libraries will be closed. The St. Lawrence Market, which is typically closed on Monday, will still close on the holiday.There will be no change to garbage pick-up.A number of places will be open, including theEaton Centre, Sherway Gardens, Scarborough Town Centre, Yorkdale, Dufferin Mall, Gerrard Square, Whole Foods and most major grocery stores, Summerhill Market and Eataly. Residents and visitors can also visit the AGO, the ROM, the Toronto Zoo, Ripley’s Aquarium, the CN Tower, the Aga Khan Museum, the Hockey Hall of Fame and select Beer Store and LCBO locations.
Most bars, cafes and restaurants that are typically open on Mondays will be open, but call ahead to be sure.
Although outside the city, Canada’s Wonderland will be open.
Transit users should note that the TTC will operate on holiday service hours.
