Happening in Amsterdam
The 9 Streets or “De Negen Straatjes” as the locals call the connecting streets between canals in Amsterdam are an enthralling historical destination showcasing the very best in a retail layout.
Loads of history in the 9 Streets in Amsterdam
The 9 Streets were created way back in the 17th century, and today they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The canals are Prinsengracht, Singel, Herengracht and Keizersgracht and they are connected by smaller side streets packed with lots of businesses and shops.
The pleasure of walking around the 9 streets is that you can still get a whiff of the past with some characteristics still being seen such as the narrow streets, facades that are lit at night, old type Dutch cafes, vintage shops plus an awesome mix of miscellaneous shops. You can have a wonderful time shopping in stores packed with wonderful goodies, and join the people of Amsterdam for authentic Dutch fare.
Shopping in De Negen Straatjes
Visitors to the city as well as locals know too well that apart from boutique fashion, you’ll find some sought after international brands too. In Hartenstraat for example, you’ll find the likes of Timberland and Fred Perry among others. Wijde Heisteeg, on the other hand, is admired for its particularly narrow streets, and here you’ll find extraordinary attractions such as the Amsterdam Cheese Company and Amsterdam’s floating flower market.
This extraordinary flower market has been in existence since 1862 already, with flower stall stands on the houseboats, making it a wonderfully fragrant, colourful place, where you are guaranteed to find all kinds of tulips and other types of flowers.
Talking of cheese, those who love different cheeses should take a look at Runstraat where de Kaaskamer sells a huge selection of local edams and goudas. You’ll be blown away by the sheer assortment, looks and smells of the finest cheeses, but that’s not all. You can take your pick from fresh salads, delicious takeaway sandwiches as well as wines, and they can shrink-wrap anything for you to take back with you.
9 Streets Amsterdam – A favourite meeting destination
These amazing streets are a meeting place for those looking for shopping, lunch, breakfast, dinner, convenience, some history, fashion, creativity and refreshment. This is Amsterdam’s most trendy retail hotspot and you can say it is the place where people come together to enjoy a super shopping experience.
The streets offer everything from getting your banking done to jewellers, furniture stores, many hotels, clothing stores, tobacconists and coffee shops. These 9 Streets have a whole lot of factors that have made shopping so distinctive – the place to celebrate with friends and family. Whether you’re a local or an expat in the city, you’ll be able to try some of the best local and international food and beer and feel right at home.
Perhaps it’s the dedicated cycle lanes, the excellent public transport system and the Dutch city’s amazing cultural and social life which is so varied and appealing that brings so many expats to the city. They love the amazing cultural experiences to be had such as the cool canal-side concerts and outdoor festivals – something for everyone in a cosmopolitan, international community.
Kick back with the locals and expats in the 9 Streets
The sun’s out and you know what that means – time to kick back with the locals and visitors and enjoy all that De Negen Straatjes offers you. These are the most trendy shops you can imagine. If you love shopping, dining and wining and enjoying a good time, this is one shopping festival not to be missed.
You can browse between the many stores which sell a wonderful variety of goods and offers something for every member of the family, especially since there is an amazing selection of delicious treats to be had. Berenstraat is known as the street for combining shopping with dining and there is a very popular cafe restaurant to be found known as Zwaantje.
What is particularly notable is that there is also a small nigh grocery store which is open 7 days a week which sells all those important little things you might need at an unearthly hour.
An absolute favourite
The reason people love travelling to Amsterdam is the opportunity to find destinations with lots of fun and entertainment but also lots of peace and quiet. The 9 Streets are an absolute favourite experience, with great places to stay where your budget and preferences have been carefully considered.
