  • Mets' Kodai Senga: Nearing rehab assignment

    Rotowire

Senga (shoulder/triceps) said Tuesday he expects to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander threw a successful live batting practice session Sunday and is scheduled for another Thursday, which could be the final hurdle before he's cleared for minor-league games. Senga will need multiple rehab starts to build up his workload before making his season debut for the Mets, so he likely won't be activated from the 60-day injured list until after the All-Star break.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Sidelined at least four weeks

    Rotowire

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Marte (knee) will be sidelined for "at least four weeks," Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Marte will be shut down for 15 days to allow a right knee bone bruise to heal and will need time to ramp things back up after that. A rehab assignment at some point before activation seems likely. Ben Gamel replaced Marte on the roster and could see some reps in right field, although DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor should be higher in the pecking order. Taylor is starting in right Tuesday after Stewart started there in the Mets' previous game Sunday.

  • Mets' Edwin Diaz: Will not appeal suspension

    Rotowire

Diaz will begin serving his 10-game foreign substance suspension Tuesday after declining to appeal the ruling, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

While adamant he didn't use anything illegal, Diaz likely stood little chance of winning an appeal, so he'll get the suspension over with now. The closer will be eligible to return July 6. Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett are candidates for save chances while Diaz is unavailable.

  • Mets' Ben Gamel: Called up from Triple-A

    Rotowire

The Mets selected Gamel's contract from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.

Gamel will be brought up to the major-league roster for the first time this season, providing additional help in the outfield with Starling Marte (knee) hitting the 10-day injured list. Gamel owns a .961 OPS with seven home runs across 190 plate appearances with Syracuse and should compete with DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor for work in right field.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Lands on IL with knee bone bruise

    Rotowire

The Mets placed Marte on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right knee bone bruise.

Marte was given the diagnosis following an MRI and has been prescribed 15 days of rest. The hope is that he will be able to ramp back up after that point, but with two weeks of no activities, a return before the All-Star break seems unlikely. DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor will likely be the primary beneficiaries of Marte's absence.

  • Mets' Kodai Senga: Another live BP on tap

    Rotowire

Senga (shoulder/tricep) is scheduled to throw his next live batting practice session later this week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

While facing hitters Sunday in Port St. Lucie, Fla. for the first time since early May, Senga tossed 22 pitches. He's scheduled to rejoin the Mets in New York this week, and assuming his arm responded well to Sunday's workout, he'll throw another live BP within the next few days. Senga was placed on the injured list coming out of spring training with a shoulder capsule strain and advanced to mound work in late April before having his throwing program shut down when he experienced tricep tightness and nerve inflammation. He's since resumed ramping back up but isn't expected to be ready to make his 2024 debut with the Mets until after the All-Star break.

  • Mets' Shintaro Fujinami: Starting rehab assignment

    Rotowire

Fujinami (shoulder) was sent Tuesday to the Mets' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate to begin a rehab assignment.

Fujinami has been out all season with a right shoulder strain but is finally ready for game action. He will require a lengthy rehab assignment which will eventually involve him moving up to higher affiliates. Fujinami isn't expected to return from the 60-day injured list until the second half.

  • Mets' DJ Stewart: In line for more work

    Rotowire

Stewart could handle the strong side of a platoon in left field with Tyrone Taylor while Starling Marte (knee) is on the injured list, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

The Mets do have other options to replace Marte, including shifting Jeff McNeil to left and giving Jose Iglesias more time at second base, but some form of a Stewart-Taylor timeshare is the most likely scenario. Stewart has provided value at the plate against right-handers this season, slashing .204/.350/.372 with five homers over 140 plate appearances in that split, but Taylor is the better defensive outfielder.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Might be needed before break

    Rotowire

Butto could make a spot start for the Mets prior to the All-Star break, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Edwin Diaz's 10-game suspension could force the team to get creative when it comes to keeping the bullpen fresh. One possibility would be to option David Peterson and Tylor Megill down to Triple-A Syracuse after their next starts, replacing them with relief arms. In that scenario, Butto and Christian Scott would be needed to make spot starts when those turns in the rotation come around again. Butto has allowed two runs or less in five of six starts for Syracuse since being sent down in May, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 32.1 innings over that stretch -- ratios that are almost an exact match for those he's generated at the big-league level this season.

  • Mets' Christian Scott: Could get call soon

    Rotowire

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged Sunday that Scott has a "good chance" of being called up from Triple-A Syracuse to enter the rotation during the team's upcoming stretch of 17 games in 17 days that begins Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. "He's in play," Mendoza said.

The Mets have already confirmed their starters through Saturday, so Scott could be called up as early as Sunday's series finale versus the Astros. More likely, the Mets will allow Scott to make another start at Triple-A this week before having him join the big-league rotation for next week's series in Washington. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Scott has been working on his sweeper during his latest stint with Syracuse, and over three starts since his demotion in late May, he's posted a 2.08 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB in 13 innings.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Likely headed to IL

    Rotowire

Marte was advised Monday to rest for the next 15 days after being diagnosed with bone inflammation in his right knee, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Marte was sent for an MRI on Monday after experiencing soreness in his right knee, and while the team has yet to confirm that he'll be placed on the injured list, that transaction will likely be made Tuesday. Marte will likely be re-evaluated following the 15-day shutdown period to determine the next steps in his recovery.

  • Mets' Edwin Diaz: Handed 10-game suspension

    Rotowire

Major League Baseball suspended Diaz for 10 games Monday for violating prohibitions on foreign substances, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Diaz was ejected from Sunday's 5-2 win over the Cubs after failing the "sticky substance" test from the crew chief upon entering the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. The suspension will go into effect beginning with Tuesday's game against the Yankees, and assuming he elects not to appeal the ban, the 30-year-old closer won't be eligible to pitch until July 6 against the Pirates. Adam Ottavino and Reed Garrett will be the likely candidates to step in for save opportunities during Diaz's absence.

  • Mets' Bryce Montes de Oca: Cleared for action at Double-A

    Rotowire

Montes de Oca (elbow) was activated from Triple-A Syracuse's 60-day injured list Saturday and assigned to Double-A Binghamton.

Montes de Oca made his 2024 Binghamton debut Saturday against Akron, striking out two over a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old reliever had been on the IL all season for Syracuse while completing his recovery from his March 2023 Tommy John surgery. Montes de Oca could eventually join Syracuse later on in the campaign if he's first able to string together a few quality appearances with Binghamton.

  • Mets' Joe Hudson: Cast off 40-man roster

    Rotowire

The Mets designated Hudson for assignment Monday.

As expected, Hudson's stay with the Mets lasted only through the weekend while No. 2 catcher Luis Torrens (personal) was away from the team while on the paternity list. Torrens has since linked back up with the team and will be available Tuesday for the start of the two-game series against the Yankees, leaving no need for the Mets to carry Hudson as a third catcher.

  • Mets' Luis Torrens: Comes off paternity list

    Rotowire

The Mets reinstated Torrens (personal) from the paternity list Monday.

Torrens was away from the Mets during their weekend series with the Cubs while he welcomed a new addition to his family. He'll be available Tuesday for the start of the Mets' two-game set with the Yankees and will assume duties as Francisco Alvarez's top backup behind the dish. Joe Hudson was designated for assignment to clear room on the active roster for Torrens.

  • Mets' Reed Garrett: Collects seventh hold

    Rotowire

Garrett gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning Sunday to record his seventh hold of the season in a win over the Cubs.

Edwin Diaz came on the ninth but got ejected for a foreign substance, and Jake Diekman wound up getting a one-out save as Mets manager Carlos Mendoza scrambled to fill in for his closer. Diaz is facing a 10-game suspension, and based on Mendoza's bullpen usage while the right-hander was out injured, Garrett should be viewed as the favorite to handle any save chances during that time. Diekman, Adam Ottavino, Drew Smith and even potentially Dedniel Nunez could all be factors in the ninth as well, however.

  • Severino throws 6 shutout innings and Mets top Cubs 5-2 after Díaz ejected before throwing a pitch

    Stats

  • Mets' Harrison Bader: Two doubles, steal in win

    Rotowire

Bader went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, one stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Cubs.

Bader entered Sunday 0-for-9 over his last three games. He broke the drought with his fourth multi-hit effort over 17 contests in June. While he's hitting .255 (13-for-51) this month, eight of those knocks have gone for extra bases, and he's driven in 11 runs. The outfielder is slashing .268/.316/.388 with four home runs, 13 doubles, 27 RBI, 27 runs scored and 10 steals through 67 games this season.
