Lovetoast? Then why not create it in vector form? Here you have threedelicious options: butter on toast, egg on toast and chocolate, and banana on toast.
First, you will learn how to draw a simple slice oftoast followed by the vector bread texture and the toasted look. Youwill continue with the toppings: the melted butter, the fried egg,the chocolate spread and banana slices. Sounds great? Let's begin!

1.Starta New Project
LaunchIllustratorandgo to File> New toopen a blank document. Type a name for your file, set up thedimensions and then select PixelsasUnitsandRGBasColorMode.Make sure that AlignNew Objects to Pixel Grid isnot checked.
Next,go to Edit> Preferences > General andset the KeyboardIncrement to1px andwhile there, go to Unitstomake sure they are set as in the following image. I usually work withthese settings and they will help you throughout the drawing process.
2.Createa Slice of Toast
Step1
Startby drawing a rounded rectangle and an ellipse with the dimensionsshown, and then arrange them as in the image.
Step2
With the two shapes selected, press Unite in the Pathfinder panel in orderto create the toast shape. Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) toselect only the two points indicated on each side and move themoutwards a little to make the slice wider at the top.
Step3
Fillthe toast shape with the radial gradient shown but use the GradientTool (G) to adjust the angle.
Now,Copy and Paste in Back (Control-B) the toast shape in order to createa copy. Select this copy and with the help of the Direct SelectionTool (A) move the points indicated in the direction of the arrows tomake the shape slightly bigger than the original. Fill the copy witha warm brown.
Step4
Usethe Add Anchor Point Tool (+) to add an extra point at the bottom ofthe toast shape and move it upwards a little by pressing the Up Arrowkey on your keyboard.
Next,draw a half-ellipse with the Pen Tool (P), fill it with brown andsend it in back.Group(Control-G) all the shapes and name the group “basic toast”.
3.Createthe Vector Bread Texture
Step1
Grabthe Pencil Tool (N) and draw a random path over the toast in aup-and-down motion. Stroke this path with a Scatter Brush called InkSpatter 1 that you can find in the Brush Libraries Menu > Artistic> Artistic_Ink. Set the Stroke Weight at 0.25 pt to make thetexture smaller.
Step2
Withthe path still selected, go to the Object menu and choose ExpandAppearance. Fill the resulting group of shapes with a linear gradientfrom white to black, and then set to Blending Mode Color Burn and 60%Opacity.
Step3
Drawa new path over the toast with the Pencil Tool (N) in a circularmotion this time. Select a 0.25 pt white Stroke and the Ink Spatter 1Scatter Brush, and then set the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
Step4
It'stime to clean up the edges. First, select the toast shape, Copy andPaste in Place (Shift-Control-V) and remove the existing gradientfill. Now, select the two textures along with the copy of the toastand go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make (Control-7).
4.Createthe Toasted Look
Step1
Grabthe Pen Tool (P) and draw three shapes like in the next image. Fillthem with the colors indicated next to each one, then go to Effect >Stylize > Feather and apply a Radius of 15 px, 25 px and 15 pxagain. Set the Blending Mode to Color Burn for all of them.
Step2
Afteryou apply the specified settings, your toast should look like in theimage below. Select everything on your artboard and Group (Control-G)them; then name the group “toast”.
5.Createthe 'Butter on Toast' Icon
Step1
Nowthat the toast is ready, you can create the first icon which isbutter on toast. Draw a shape like in the next image and fill it withthe linear gradient shown. Go to Effect > Stylize > Feather andapply a Radius of 8 px and then reduce the Opacityto 75%.
Step2
Drawa small wavy shape on the right side of the previous shape, give it awhite fill and reduce the Opacity to 70%. This will create a glossylook.
Group(Control-G) these two shapes and then set the group to Blending ModeScreen. You can name it “melted butter”.
Step3
Next,draw a rounded square and select light yellow as the fill color. Goto Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow and apply the settings shownbelow.
Step4
Drawanother rounded square that is slightly bigger at the top and send it behind. Select yellow as the fill color.
Step5
Continuewith a shape similar to the one below and fill it with the lineargradient shown. Set it to Blending Mode Screen and 60% Opacity, and thensend this shape behind the two rounded squares.
Step6
Grabthe Pen Tool (P) and draw a path following the top left edge of thefirst rounded square. Select a 2 pt white Stroke and the WidthProfile 3 in the Stroke panel. To add more glossiness, draw a smallmoon-like shape on the melted butter with a white fill.
Atthis point, you can Group (Control-G) the last five paths/shapes andname the group “butter cube”.
Step7
Thebutter on toast icon is ready now.
6.Createthe 'Egg on Toast' Icon
Step1
Goto the butter on toast icon, select the “toast” group and make acopy on your artboard. Now, draw the shape of the egg and fill itwith the radial gradient shown. Go to Effect > Stylize > DropShadow and apply the settings from below.
Step2
Drawthe yolk shape and fill it with orange. Continue with the secondshape shown below, which is behind the yolk and has a white fill.
Step3
Fillthe next shape with a linear gradient from white to black and thenset the Blending Mode to Screen.
Step4
Drawa thin moon-like shape in the lower right side of the yolk and fillit with the radial gradient shown.
Step5
Drawan ellipse on the yolk and fill it with the radial gradient shown,then go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur and apply a Radius of3 px.
Step6
Next,draw three small shapes on the left side of the yolk. Having themselected, go to Object > Compound Path > Make (Control-8) andafter that, fill the resulting shape with the linear gradient shown.
Step7
Tocreate the appearance of fried edges, draw a few paths following theedge of the egg with the Pen Tool (P) or the PencilTool (N). Use an Art Brush called Chalk-Scribble to stroke thesepaths, that you can find in the Brush Libraries Menu > Artistic >Artistic_ChalkCharcoalPencil. Set the Stroke Weightand the colorsaccordingly. For a more intense fried look, you can draw many morepaths like these.
Step8
Next,draw some very small ellipses next to the edge of the egg and fillthem with light shades of brown.
Step9
Purelyfor decoration purposes, let's add some ground pepper. Draw some tinycircles on the egg, as many as you want and after that, create acompound path or Group (Control-G) them. Select dark brown as thefill color.
Step10
Theegg on toast icon is ready at this point.
7.Createthe 'Chocolate Spread and Banana on Toast' Icon
Step1
First,go to the previous icon and make another copy of the “toast”group. Grab the Pen Tool (P) and draw a random shape over the toast.Select brown as the fill color and then apply the Drop Shadow effect.
Step2
Tocreate the banana slice, start with a round shape and then draw aslightly bigger shape behind it. Draw another round shape in thecenter and fill it with the radial gradient shown.
Step3
Drawa shape similar to the one below in the center of the slice, use thecolor indicated and then set it to Blending Mode Multiply and 50%Opacity.
Drawa smaller shape in the center, select orange as the fill color andthen set it to Blending Mode Multiply and 50% Opacity.
Step4
Usethe Pen Tool (P) to draw two paths on the sides. Select a 1.5 ptwhite Stroke and the Width Profile 1 from the Stroke panel.
Step5
Group(Control-G) all the shapes that compose the banana slice. Make morecopies, slightly rotate them, and arrange them over the chocolate spread.
Step6
Usethe Pencil Tool (N) to draw a few paths between the slices of banana, like in the next image. Select a 2 pt Stroke and the Width Profile 3, and after that, apply a 2 px Gaussian Blur. Reduce the Opacity to70%.
Step7
Drawmore paths between the slices of banana and between the shading pathsfrom the previous step. Select a 2 pt Stroke and the Width Profile 3, and after that, apply a 2 px Gaussian Blur for all of them. For thetwo red paths in the middle, increase the Gaussian Blur Radius to3px and also reduce the Opacity to 80%.
Step8
Atthis point the chocolate spread and banana icon is ready.
8.Add Shadow to the Icons
Selectonly the “basic toast” group from each icon and go to Effect >Blur > Gaussian Blur. Apply the settings shown and hit OK.
