A Silent Voice

What to Know

Critics Consensus

As beautifully crafted as it is powerfully written, A Silent Voice looks at teen bullying from a soberingly hard-hitting perspective that's uncommon for the animated medium.

Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review paintersly m One of my favorite anime, I am struggling to find one thing I dislike about it. It's not easy to create such a beautiful film, visually and emotionally. It really deepens your perspective on bullying and how that effects people, and depression as well. I love how they took a typical storyline and did something unordinary and amazing with it. They could have painted the story as the typical "bully = bad" I see so often, but instead they chose to be more realistic, and way more eye-catching. Each scene takes my breath away, as they tenderly explore themes of depression, suicide, bullying, forgiveness and love. One of the hardest things to do, for me anyway, is to forgive yourself and let your past be your past and your present be your present, especially when you've done something terrible that continues to haunt you. I love that the writers really went deep into both of their emotions and how guilty they both felt because of something they can't change, to the point of suicide. Another thing I like about it is definitely the likeability of each character. Even when they make the wrong choices that have me ripping my hair out, you can understand them and why they did it. They make mistakes and do bad things so humanly, it's a thing that many people skip over when creating characters. No character in the movie is really "bad" and that's why I love it to death.
